In our society information is more valued than classical assets as labor or capital. The amounts we produce and sell are loosing their all-important status. The thing that really matters, as Jonas Ridderstrale and Kjell Nordström state in their book “Funky Business” (Expansión - Prentice Hall), is what is going on in the minds of the people who participate in society, those who produce as well as those who consume. Finally, after a long time of regarding things the same way, we start to see the light and acknowledge that a person is a world in itself. People are getting aware of their individuality, they start to realize how unique they really are and they are defending their right of being considered as an individual. Nowadays people want to be treated as irreplaceable, and they resist being included in some global unifying model...[read +]

Last July, The Brandery, a Barcelona fashion fair, announced a shop-window contest in which 160 shops participated. This contest wasn’t limited to the town of Barcelona but involved other cities like Sabadell, Granollers, Lleida, Madrid, Bilbao, as well as the isle of Mallorca, the isle of Ibiza and the mini-state of Andorra. The theme was “Windows on Summer Holidays”, inviting display designers to inspire themselves on the summer holidays. Six finalists were chosen through a public inquiry at social networks like Facebook and Flickr that had published photos of the participating shop windows.  Woman magazine, co-organizer of the event, elected the final winner. Another co-organizer, the Tourist Office...[read +]

Saturday and Sunday mornings are kind of special.  No rushing, no appointments, nothing urgent. It permits one to spend time on one´s hobbies. Reading, for example. In my case this means, reading something else thanI have to read during the week, something to look forward to, something that make me wish it was weekend already. In 2009 I used the quiet mornings of my weekends reading a book about Gene Moore, Tiffany’s display designer, about whom I wrote in earlier issues. 2010 was spent with reading the biography of Van Day Treux, someone we discuss in a following issue. And this year I read Ian Thompson’s “The Sun King’s Garden”, a biography of André le Nôtre, landscape designer, architect and... [read +]

I included this article in the Creativity and Sustainability section because the design presented here was made by reusing material that was left over from earlier campaigns. The mannequin was used in Euskadi in a Window (Superregui), and later on in design classes at Vitrina Formación. The strings of leds were also used earlier, just as the green paper for the floor and the black material for the background. The vinyl text was the only item that was specially produced for this window... [read +]
